I am also profoundly sorry for the way men have treated women as second class citizens of the Kingdom. Very unchristlike.

Lia, you are made of awesome. I would not have been able to sit through as much as you did. As a childhood Southern Baptist who moved to New England and THEN went to seminary, I had left behind the culture of my childhood. There is still sexism in the more progressive denominations, but it's not as blatant and it's getting better. I believe it. Did you see the discussion of "A Church of Her Own" at RevGalBlogPals this week? A lot of it was right on point.

I'm really sorry for your experiences. It makes me sick. Thanks for speaking out against this injustice that many people still blindly accept. I pray more women--and men--have the courage to expose it for the damage it does to people's lives.

Jonathan,

First, I love being called "Rogue." That makes me smile.

Second, love doesn't mean validating the content of one's belief, especially when it means invalidating another's human rights.

And perhaps the best way to love people who misinterpret Scripture is to educate them, to keep doing what women do in church (by the way, I heard one of the best sermons I've heard in a long while today, and, yep, you guessed it. A woman), to do our jobs well.

And while women have come a long way, we still have so far to go. I just think I should get off my bum and get busy.

I agree with you Lia, but just be sure not to begin to lump all evangelicals into the same group...SBCs have their own issues, but I consider myself an evangelical and I believe God calls women into pastoral ministry...

Rogue, I want to first validate how you felt by the two experiences. It's a deep problem and one that absolutely needs to be addressed.

But something hit me in what you said that I want to ask about. Does love mean validating the content of someone's belief? Or does it mean validating the dignity of the person, even if the content does jibe? I don't see the former as part of the Way, but I do see the latter.

I guess I just didn't want you to think anyone was expecting you to agree with the content. True justice calls for both truth and grace. And you were speaking the truth.
